    Global Feast : New York

    Best of January 2016
    February 7, 2016

The best of January 2016 goes to TIMNA in East Village. Since I am on my annual new year detox diet right now, when we go out for dinner, we try to pick a place which has many healthy dishes. Mediterranean restaurants usually offer many healthy options and I personally really love Mediterranean cuisine.

TIMNA's chef Nir Mesika is a native of Israel with a Moroccan heritage, so his cuisine is something like modern Israeli-Mediterranean. Since it's open in April 2015, it has become quite popular. The New York Times did not give it an awesome review but I enjoyed their food and that's all that matters to me.

    Red Cat

Very rustic and cozy feeling in the restaurant. They have beautiful curved woodwork all over the restaurant.

    Narcissa Cucumber ribon

(top left) Cauliflower with curried tahini, persian cucumber, dried grapes and puffed quinoa
(top right) wild fish with sorrel puree, goat cheese, sunchoke confit, spinach fondu, chickpea & cumin
(bottom) Mediterranean sashimi: cured tuna, green tabouli, tzatziki and crispy beet leather

All the dishes had layers of flavors from the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Middle East. The cauliflower dish comes with creamy tahini from Israel and crunchy puffed quinoa. I loved the Mediterranean sashimi dish a lot. It had cured tuna with black-quinoa tabbouleh, roasted garlic cloves, cucumbers and beets chips. A green soup-like tzatziki was on the side. It was a little too soupy and it was hard to eat with fork (I wanted a spoon) but it was fresh, flavorful and hs interesting textures. I saw the person next to me was having octopus and it looked really great. I would love to have that next time I visit.
